The Colt "Commander" is a trimmed
down version of the "Government" model 1911 A1. Proposed at the end of 1949, it
was intended to fill a Military need for a lighter handgun devoted to officers. It was
available in several calibres among which were the 9 mm Para and the .38 Super. All the
pre-1970 production was made in a light alloy, referenced by Colt as
"Coltalloy®". From 1970 on, an all-steel version (1.010 gr) was introduced
under the name of "Combat Commander". To get more information on the
"Commander", refer to our book.
